Amid significant unrest in Bangladesh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened a crucial meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) on the evening of August 5 at his official residence, 7 Lok Kalyan Marg. This meeting was called in response to the resignation of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who stepped down following unprecedented anti-government protests.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval were present at the meeting to brief PM Modi on the evolving situation in Bangladesh.
Earlier in the day, Jaishankar met with Prime Minister Modi to discuss the situation. This meeting coincided with Sheikh Hasina’s arrival at the Hindon airbase in Ghaziabad, where she made a stopover on her way to London. Jaishankar reportedly updated Modi on the developments, although no official statement was released.
It is also reported that Jaishankar informed the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, about the unfolding events in Bangladesh.
NSA Ajit Doval had a brief meeting with Sheikh Hasina at the Hindon airbase. This interaction occurred during a scheduled refuelling stop for Hasina’s aircraft. Following the refuelling, sources suggest that Sheikh Hasina may not depart for London as planned due to unforeseen issues. Instead, she is expected to meet her daughter, Saima Wazed, the WHO’s regional director for South-East Asia, who is based in Delhi.
India has agreed to provide safe passage for Sheikh Hasina’s aircraft through its airspace following a request from Dhaka. The Indian government is closely monitoring the rapidly changing situation in Bangladesh, but as of now, there has been no official statement from India regarding the recent developments.
