The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has requested the Election Commission to reschedule the Haryana assembly elections, currently set for October 1. The BJP cites concerns that the proximity of several holidays around this date could negatively affect voter turnout. In response, the Congress has criticized the BJP, suggesting that the request is a tactic to delay the electoral process and avoid a potential defeat.
State BJP President Mohan Lal Badoli explained that the party’s request for a delay stems from the fact that October
1 falls on a Tuesday, making it a less favorable voting day given the surrounding holidays. With weekends and additional holidays for Gandhi Jayanti and Agrasen Jayanti, the BJP fears that many voters might take extended leave, leading to a lower turnout. Badoli proposed October 8 as an alternative date, though he emphasized that the final decision rests with the Election Commission.
Congress Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda dismissed the BJP’s concerns, stating that the party is prepared to proceed with the election as originally scheduled. Hooda accused the BJP of attempting to postpone the polls under the guise of logistical issues, arguing that voters are eager for a change in government and will not miss their chance to vote.
The BJP’s request also considers the impact of community events, such as the Bishnoi community’s annual fair, which might affect voter participation. BJP MLA Dura Ram Bishnoi confirmed that many members of this community travel to Rajasthan for the event, which could further diminish turnout in areas with significant Bishnoi populations.
The Chief Electoral Officer of Haryana has acknowledged receipt of the BJP’s request and will forward it to the Election Commission for a final decision. The election schedule, announced on July 16, includes notification on September 5, the last date for nominations on September 12, scrutiny on September 13, and results announced on October 4
