The CBI has filed an FIR against Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, following an order from the Calcutta High Court. This development is part of an investigation into the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the college.
On the court’s directive, the CBI’s Anti-Corruption Branch initiated the investigation and re-registered the case, taking over from a state-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT). The SIT transferred all relevant documents to the CBI at its Nizam Palace office on Saturday morning.
The case gained widespread attention after the tragic incident on August 9 involving the trainee doctor. The Calcutta High Court has mandated that the CBI submit a progress report on the investigation within three weeks, with a follow-up hearing scheduled for September 17 to review the findings.
In addition to the criminal investigation, the CBI is also looking into financial irregularities alleged to have occurred during Ghosh’s tenure at the college. This probe follows a petition by former deputy superintendent Akhtar Ali, who sought a financial misconduct investigation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
