CBI Sends Forensic Team for Psycho-Analysis of Kolkata Murder Accused: Key Updates and Nationwide Reactions
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has formally appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding enhanced security measures like “airport-level security” at hospitals.
In a major development, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) dispatched a specialized team from Delhi’s Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) to conduct a psycho-analysis of Sanjay Roy, the prime suspect in the tragic rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Roy, a civic volunteer linked to Kolkata Police, was apprehended on Saturday, one day after the doctor’s body was discovered in the seminar hall of the hospital’s chest department between 3 am and 5 am. Roy, also a trained boxer, reportedly developed close ties with senior police officers over time, which resulted in his transfer to the Kolkata Police Welfare Board and his placement at the RG Kar hospital, according to PTI.
The case has sparked widespread outrage across the nation. Here are the latest updates:
1. Ex-Principal Questioned: The CBI interrogated Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, for the second consecutive day. He was also questioned on Friday night. Investigators sought details about his initial reaction to the doctor’s death, who was informed first, and how the police were notified.
2. Crime Scene Investigations: Separate CBI teams visited the crime scene at RG Kar hospital and the barracks of Kolkata Police’s Armed Forces fourth battalion, where the accused, Sanjay Roy, was staying. Samples from the hospital were sent to the CFSL for testing, and officers questioned those stationed at the barracks regarding Roy’s whereabouts on the morning of the incident.
3. IMA’s Demands to PM Modi: The IMA urged the Prime Minister to enact a Central law incorporating the 2020 amendments to the Epidemic Diseases Act into the draft “The Healthcare Services Personnel and Clinical Establishments (Prohibition of Violence and Damage to Property) Bill, 2019” following the murder of the doctor.
4. Political Allegations and Protests: The opposition CPI(M) accused authorities of attempting to “cover up the truth” by targeting doctors protesting at RG Kar Medical College. Sitaram Yechury labeled the incident as a “disgraceful” move to suppress the pursuit of justice.
5. Nationwide Medical Protests: Medical professionals nationwide have launched protests against the brutal crime. Private hospitals in Delhi joined by shutting down outpatient services, elective surgeries, and IPD functions.
6. State Government’s Safety Measures: In response, the West Bengal government announced a new safety program for women working night shifts, including designated restrooms, CCTV surveillance, and women volunteers under the initiative ‘Rattirer Shaathi’.
7. Ministry’s Appeal to Doctors: The Union Health Ministry urged protesting doctors to return to work, offering to form a committee to suggest ways to improve safety for healthcare workers.
8. Nirbhaya’s Mother Demands Action: Asha Devi, mother of the 2012 Delhi gang rape victim, called for Mamata Banerjee’s resignation, criticizing her response to the incident. Asha Devi asserted that Banerjee failed to uphold her state leader duty.
