Following a recent incident involving a resident doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, representatives from the Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA), Indian Medical Association (IMA), and Resident Doctors’ Associations of Government Medical Colleges & Hospitals in Delhi met with the Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare in New Delhi.
The associations voiced their concerns regarding the safety and security of healthcare workers in the workplace. In response, the Union Health Ministry assured them that every effort would be made to safeguard healthcare professionals. The Ministry acknowledged the gravity of the situation and emphasized that the government is attuned to their demands. Notably, 26 states have already enacted legislation for the protection of healthcare workers.
To address the concerns raised, the Ministry announced plans to form a committee tasked with recommending measures for ensuring the safety of healthcare professionals. The committee will seek input from all stakeholders, including State Governments, to develop comprehensive solutions.
The Ministry also urged doctors to return to their duties, citing the need to prioritize public health in light of the rising cases of dengue and malaria.
