The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Sunday conducted a polygraph test on Sanjoy Roy, the prime suspect in the rape and murder of a woman doctor from RG Kar Medical College, Kolkata.
Roy, a 33-year-old civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, was arrested on August 10, just a day after the doctor’s body was discovered in the seminar hall of the medical college.
The CBI has also intensified its investigation into financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital during the tenure of its former principal, Sandip Ghosh. On Sunday, officials from the CBI’s anti-corruption branch raided 15 locations in Kolkata and Howrah, including Ghosh’s residence.
Latest Updates:
Sanjoy Roy’s polygraph test was conducted at Kolkata’s Presidency Jail, where he is currently in custody, according to an anonymous official cited by PTI.
The polygraph tests lasted around four hours. CBI also performed lie-detection tests on a few others at their Kolkata office.
Previously, the CBI tested four individuals, including Sandip Ghosh, on Saturday. While polygraph test results aren’t admissible as evidence in court, they could guide the investigation.
A specialized polygraph team was flown in from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in Delhi for the tests.
Meanwhile, the CBI expanded its probe by conducting searches at properties linked to Sandip Ghosh and 14 others concerning the alleged corruption at RG Kar Medical College. Ghosh is accused of illegal activities involving unclaimed corpses, selling biomedical waste, and granting tenders in exchange for commissions during his time as principal.
According to PTI, seven CBI officers questioned Ghosh at his residence from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., with a nearly 90-minute delay before he answered the door.
The agency also questioned the former medical superintendent and vice-principal of the college, Sanjay Vashisth, along with other officials from the forensic medicine department. According to a CBI official, “Vashisth is being questioned about his knowledge of the financial irregularities that took place during his tenure.”
CBI sources indicated that they found significant evidence during the raids. One official noted, “There’s a lot that has come to light,” hinting at crucial findings in the ongoing investigation.
