Vinesh Phogat Receives Hero’s Welcome on Returning Home After Paris Setback
Wrestler Vinesh Phogat was greeted with a massive show of support as hundreds of fans and well-wishers gathered at Delhi’s IGI airport on Saturday to welcome her back to the country. The crowd, which included stars like Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik, and local panchayat leaders, displayed unwavering solidarity for Vinesh after her disqualification from the Paris Olympics due to being overweight on the day of her 50kg final.
Riding in an open jeep adorned with garlands, Vinesh expressed her gratitude, saying, “I thank all the countrymen, I am very fortunate,” as she addressed the enthusiastic crowd of supporters.
Olympic medalist Sakshi Malik praised Vinesh’s contributions, stating, “What Vinesh has done for the country, very few people do. She deserves even more respect and recognition.”
Vinesh had remained in Paris after her appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport for a joint silver medal was dismissed on Wednesday. Gagan Narang, a London Olympics bronze medalist and India’s chef de mission in Paris shared a heartfelt message on social media, calling Vinesh a true champion. “Sometimes one doesn’t need an Olympic medal to inspire a billion dreams. @vineshphogat you have inspired generations. Salute to your grit,” Narang wrote, alongside a photo of the two at the Paris airport before their flight back to Delhi.
Vinesh’s return has sparked excitement in her hometown as well. “People are eagerly waiting to welcome her to our village and show their support,” said her brother Harvinder Phogat.
Despite the setback in Paris, the overwhelming reception Vinesh Phogat received underscores the deep admiration and respect she continues to command as a national sporting icon.
