India expressed its readiness to assist in the peace process between Russia and Ukraine, reiterating its stance for a negotiated resolution. However, the ultimate decision on initiating peace talks remains with the two nations involved in the conflict.
During a media briefing, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal addressed inquiries about India’s potential role in mediating between the warring countries. He emphasized India’s commitment to constructive and practical engagement with all stakeholders, highlighting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s outreach to both Moscow and Kyiv. Despite speculation about India’s mediation role following Modi’s visits to Russia and Ukraine, Jaiswal downplayed the likelihood of direct involvement, stating India would support any mutually acceptable solution that could restore peace.
Responding to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s criticism of India’s stance, Jaiswal acknowledged the remarks but focused on the positive aspects of bilateral discussions between the leaders. He reiterated that India’s position would be guided by these discussions and expressed India’s willingness to continue constructively supporting peace efforts.
India has maintained a neutral position in the ongoing conflict, refraining from condemning Russia’s actions while calling for a peaceful resolution and abstaining from Ukraine-related votes at the United Nations. Despite Ukraine’s calls for greater involvement, India remains committed to facilitating dialogue in a manner that respects the sovereignty of both nations involved.
