The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) continued questioning Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of R.G. Kar Medical College, for the fourth consecutive day on August 19, 2024, as part of their investigation into the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor. According to officials, Dr. Ghosh arrived at the CBI’s CGO Complex office in Kolkata early Monday morning.
Key areas of inquiry included why Dr. Ghosh made the victim’s parents wait for nearly three hours and who ordered the renovation of rooms near the seminar hall following the incident. The investigators are also examining his mobile phone for call records and WhatsApp chats.
In a related development, Kolkata Police arrested a person for allegedly revealing the identity of the victim on social media and issuing threats against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The arrest was made after a complaint was lodged at Taltala Police Station. The individual, using the Instagram username “Kirtisocial,” reportedly posted multiple stories that disclosed the victim’s identity and contained offensive remarks targeting the Chief Minister. The suspect is set to be produced in court.
The tragic incident has sparked protests across the country. In New Delhi, doctors demonstrated outside the Health Ministry, demanding justice and highlighting the need for stronger safety measures for healthcare workers. The Resident Doctors’ Association of AIIMS has called for a central law to protect medical professionals from violence, citing rising incidents of attacks on doctors and healthcare institutions.
Meanwhile, demonstrations have spread to other states. In Mysuru, medical students and doctors formed a human chain to raise public awareness, while in Visakhapatnam, a rally was held at Beach Road demanding swift justice.
In response to growing unrest, West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose has scheduled an emergency meeting with various community representatives to discuss the ongoing protests and hear public opinions. The move follows a letter from former cricketer Harbhajan Singh urging both the Governor and Chief Minister to take decisive action in the matter.
As protests escalate, demands for the accused to face the death penalty and for the Chief Minister to step down have grown louder, reflecting the public’s outrage and determination for accountability.
