In the ongoing investigation into the horrific rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, the case has triggered widespread protests and disruptions across the country. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) called for a nationwide withdrawal of non-emergency medical services for 24 hours to demand justice for the victim.
Protests have erupted in several cities, including a candlelight vigil by doctors at Ghatkopar Rajawadi Hospital in Mumbai, condemning the incident. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has led a protest march, accusing the BJP-Left alliance of orchestrating the unrest. In response, the IMA has issued a statement expressing deep concern and demanded stricter laws to ensure the safety of medical professionals.
The victim’s father, in a heart-wrenching statement, said that the entire department where his daughter worked is under suspicion. He expressed solidarity with the protesting doctors and emphasized that his daughter’s death has mobilized support nationwide.
Meanwhile, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has raised concerns about possible tampering with the crime scene after discovering sudden renovations at the site. The NCW has called for a transparent investigation to ensure no evidence is compromised.
Political tensions have also escalated, with opposition leaders demanding accountability. Former Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad criticized the Chief Minister, questioning her response to the “barbaric” crime. The Calcutta High Court has taken notice of the vandalism at RG Kar Medical College, describing it as a failure of the state machinery.
As investigations continue, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has intensified its efforts, questioning several individuals linked to the case, including the former principal of the hospital.
The situation remains tense as doctors and medical staff across the country continue their protests, with demands for enhanced security in hospitals and immediate justice for the victim. The outcome of this case is being closely watched as it has ignited a nationwide call for safer working conditions for medical professionals and stricter laws to address violence against women.
