Mamata Banerjee Urges CBI to Conclude Kolkata Doctor’s Rape-Murder Case by Sunday, Calls for Justice Amid Escalating Protests
As protests over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor within a Kolkata hospital grew more intense on Wednesday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed support for the Calcutta High Court’s decision to hand the investigation over to the CBI. She urged the agency to conclude the case by Sunday and called for the death penalty for the perpetrator, ensuring justice for the victim’s family.
Addressing the ongoing unrest, Banerjee criticized political parties for engaging in “cheap politics” and appealed to protesting doctors to end their strike and return to work, highlighting the severe impact on healthcare services. She revealed that three lives, including those of a minor and a pregnant woman, were lost due to the disruption in medical services.
In an emotional plea to the doctors, Banerjee stated, “If it brings you peace, I will touch your feet and humbly request you to resume your duties to assist those in need of medical care. We cannot afford to lose more lives.
The Chief Minister also condemned the Opposition parties, CPI(M) and BJP, for allegedly politicizing the tragic incident and inciting protests across the state. She accused them of drawing parallels to the student agitations in Bangladesh and announced that the Trinamool Congress will stage protests on August 17 in every block, ward, and municipality across West Bengal to expose the “Baam-Raam” (Left-BJP) conspiracy aimed at tarnishing the state’s image.
In response to Banerjee’s protest call, BJP IT Cell Head Amit Malviya criticized the announcement as “shocking and insensitive.” He argued that it was unacceptable for the TMC to organize a protest march on August 17 against the BJP, which had been actively seeking justice for the murdered doctor. Malviya remarked, “Is it a crime to raise our voices for a young lady doctor who was brutally murdered? Bengal will deliver its response to Mamata Banerjee soon.
