Prime Minister Narendra Modi will make his first visit to Ukraine since Russia’s invasion two years ago, the Ministry of External Affairs announced on August 19. The visit comes over a month after Modi’s meeting with President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.
The foreign ministry stated that further details about the trip will be provided later in the day. Reports suggest Modi is expected to visit Kyiv this month, as he is scheduled to be in neighboring Poland on August 21 and 22.
The recent Ukrainian incursion into Russia’s Kursk region has caught global attention, with Kyiv’s actions possibly pressuring Moscow to consider ceasefire negotiations.
Modi’s visit follows his summit with Putin on July 8, where he reaffirmed India’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and underscored the benefits of a robust India-Russia partnership. He also reiterated India’s dedication to supporting regional peace and stability.
Despite the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, India has continued to bolster its “special and privileged strategic partnership” with Russia, advocating for conflict resolution through dialogue and diplomacy.
Modi’s upcoming visit to Poland marks the first by an Indian Prime Minister in 40 years, following Morarji Desai’s visit in 1979. In Warsaw, Modi is set to hold talks with Polish President Andrzej Duda and Prime Minister Donald Tusk, focusing on defense and strategic cooperation.
