Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Kannur on August 10, 2024, to assess the situation in Wayanad, which was recently devastated by severe landslides. Landing at around 11 am, the Prime Minister proceeded to conduct an aerial survey of the affected areas, accompanied by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Governor Arif Mohammed Khan, and Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Tourism, Suresh Gopi.
During the aerial inspection, Mr. Modi observed the extensive damage in Wayanad, where landslides have claimed numerous lives and flattened entire villages. The Prime Minister’s visit is a significant move in overseeing the ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts. He is expected to meet with survivors, including those in relief camps and hospitals, to understand their needs firsthand.
Following the aerial survey, PM Modi will chair a review meeting to discuss the disaster’s impact and the state’s relief operations. The Kerala government has requested Rs 2,000 crore from the Central government to assist in the rehabilitation of those affected. The situation has prompted calls from both the ruling and opposition parties for the landslide to be declared a national disaster.
Security has been heightened in the region in preparation for the Prime Minister’s visit. The Special Protection Group (SPG) has taken over security arrangements, with more than 2,000 personnel deployed to ensure safety.
The Prime Minister’s itinerary also includes a visit to Dr. Moopan’s Wayanad Medical College at Rippon, where he will spend time with survivors, offering support and condolences to those who have suffered unimaginable loss. His presence in Wayanad underscores the government’s commitment to assisting those affected by this natural calamity.
