New Delhi: In an apparent critique of the Mamata Banerjee government regarding the recent rape and murder of a doctor at a Kolkata hospital, Prime Minister Narendra Modi voiced his concern over increasing crimes against women. Speaking during his Independence Day address, the Prime Minister stressed the urgent need for state governments to treat these issues seriously.
Highlighting women’s achievements in sectors like the Air Force, Army, Navy, and space exploration, he remarked, “But there are also troubling developments. I express my pain from the Red Fort today. As a society, we must deeply reflect.”
The Prime Minister noted the widespread outrage over crimes against women. “I share this anger. It’s essential for our country, society, and state governments to act promptly. Investigations into crimes against women should be swift, and those guilty of such monstrous acts should face strict punishment at the earliest. This is crucial to restoring trust in society,” he said, indirectly referring to the recent horrific crime involving a 31-year-old doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The Prime Minister also pointed out how media coverage often focuses heavily on such incidents when they happen, but not enough on the punishment of the perpetrators. “There should be more discussions about punishments too, so that fear is instilled in criminals. This fear is necessary,” he stated.
His comments follow the national outcry over the case, which has now been handed over to the CBI after the Calcutta High Court criticized the city police for the lack of progress and possible evidence tampering.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, facing criticism over the incident, has pledged the state’s cooperation with the central investigation, but condemned the opposition for allegedly using the tragedy to “defame” Bengal. “There’s a coordinated effort by the BJP and CPM, supported by the Centre, to tarnish Bengal’s image and exploit this situation,” she claimed, drawing parallels to student unrest in Bangladesh.
