On Wednesday, heavy rain lashed parts of Delhi, with the minimum temperature settling at 26.4 degrees Celsius, slightly below the season’s average, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The humidity level in the national capital was recorded at a high of 92 percent.
Monsoon conditions continue to dominate across the country, prompting the IMD to issue an ‘orange’ alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and several Northeastern states on August 7.
Himachal Pradesh has been particularly hard-hit by heavy rains, resulting in floods and landslides over the past few days. This has led to significant destruction, loss of lives, and extensive damage to infrastructure. Data from the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) indicates that 85 roads, including two National Highways, have been closed due to landslides and excessive rain. Additionally, 116 electricity supply schemes and 65 water supply schemes have been disrupted.
The IMD also forecasts light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, for several other states including Jammu Division, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, southwest Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal & Sikkim, parts of Northeast India, Tamil Nadu, and Goa.
According to Skymet, a cyclonic storm moving from Rajasthan towards Delhi is likely to bring moderate to heavy rainfall to the capital over the next 24 hours. However, the humidity in Delhi and its neighboring NCR is expected to remain high throughout the week.
Earlier on Monday, parts of the national capital experienced scattered and light rainfall, accompanied by strong surface winds of 30-40 kmph.
Weather officials report that Delhi has received over 114.1mm of rainfall in August so far, compared to the monthly average of 233.1mm. This indicates a significant portion of the seasonal rainfall has already been recorded.
As monsoon rains continue to impact various regions, residents are advised to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and alerts.
