Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh unveiled a commemorative coin in Chennai on August 18, 2024, to mark the birth centenary of Kalaignar M Karunanidhi, the five-time Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. In his address, Rajnath Singh hailed Karunanidhi as a revered leader, a giant in Indian politics, an accomplished administrator, a steadfast advocate for social justice, and a cultural icon.
Singh highlighted Karunanidhi’s commitment to both Tamil identity and national unity, emphasizing his belief in a balanced federal structure that accommodates diverse voices. He noted that Karunanidhi’s advocacy for state rights was rooted in promoting equity within India’s union, strengthening the essence of Indian democracy.
Reflecting on Karunanidhi’s contributions, Singh praised his focus on inclusive policies, particularly those empowering marginalized communities and promoting gender equality. From championing women’s reservations in local governance to establishing welfare boards for vulnerable workers, Karunanidhi’s work, Singh said, underscored the nation’s duty to uplift its most vulnerable citizens.
