In a significant move towards strengthening India’s green energy ambitions, Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Shri Pralhad Joshi, chaired the signing ceremony for a pioneering agreement to export Green Ammonia from India to Japan. This project offtake agreement represents a major milestone in India’s pursuit of global leadership in green hydrogen and ammonia production.
The He
ads of Terms (HoT) agreement was signed between Sembcorp Industries, Sojitz Corporation, Kyushu Electric Power Co., and NYK Line, marking the first cross-border green ammonia supply collaboration between India and Japan. This partnership underlines India’s rising prominence in the global green energy landscape.
Under this agreement, Sembcorp Industries will spearhead the production of green ammonia in India using renewable energy sources. The green ammonia will be integrated into Kyushu Electric Power Co.’s energy mix, reducing coal consumption in its thermal power plants in Japan. Sojitz Corporation will act as the intermediary, connecting the producer in India with the end-user in Japan, while NYK Line will manage the maritime transport of green ammonia between the two countries.
Addressing the event, Shri Pralhad Joshi emphasized the significance of this collaboration, stating, “Today marks a historic moment as we witness the first-ever agreement for exporting Green Ammonia from India to Japan. This agreement is a key step in establishing a reliable supply chain for green ammonia, setting the stage for future green energy collaborations between our countries.”
The Minister also highlighted India’s rapid advancements in green hydrogen and renewable energy under Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s leadership. He reiterated the government’s commitment to positioning India as a global leader in green energy by fostering partnerships, creating favorable regulatory environments, and making substantial investments in the sector.
Shri Pralhad Joshi further announced the ongoing tender for 7.5 lakh tonnes per annum (TPA) of Green Ammonia, with additional tenders for 4.5 lakh TPA capacity also in progress. These initiatives are part of India’s larger strategy to incentivize the production of over a million TPA of Green Hydrogen, reflecting the country’s determination to scale up green energy production rapidly.
The Minister also noted the deep cultural and technological ties between India, Japan, and Singapore, highlighting their cooperation on energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies. He expressed optimism that this agreement is just the beginning, with even more ambitious and impactful collaborations expected in the future.
This agreement not only strengthens India’s position as a key player in the global green energy market but also underscores the government’s unwavering support for green hydrogen and renewable energy projects. The partnership with Japan signals India’s growing expertise and dedication to sustainable development and energy independence.
