Under the Sagarmala programme, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways is developing the National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) at Lothal, Gujarat. This state-of-the-art facility is set to become a global tourist attraction, highlighting India’s maritime history through interactive and educational exhibits.
On August 23, 2024, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, chaired a project review meeting at the Mumbai Port Office. Representatives from the Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Defence (including the Navy and Coast Guard), the governments of Gujarat and Maharashtra, Prasar Bharati, and renowned architect Hafeez Contractor were present.
During the meeting, Shri Sonowal stressed the importance of integrating regional sentiments into the development of the NMHC. He highlighted that the complex is not just an infrastructure project but a tribute to India’s rich maritime legacy and a commitment to preserving cultural history.
“The National Maritime Heritage Complex is a tribute to our maritime legacy and reflects our dedication to preserving our roots. By advocating an integrated approach, we ensure the project respects regional sentiments while deepening our understanding of maritime history,” Shri Sonowal stated.
The NMHC will feature extensive exhibits, interactive installations, and educational initiatives, aiming to attract both domestic and international tourists. With Phase 1A now 57% complete, the project is on track to become a landmark destination, celebrating India’s maritime heritage on the global stage.
