Vice-President Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar today urged the nation’s industry, trade, and commerce sectors to champion local production and minimize avoidable imports. In his address, he emphasized economic nationalism as an extension of Swadeshi principles and the “vocal for local” movement, stressing that unnecessary imports strain the economy by draining foreign exchange and reducing employment opportunities for Indian workers.
Highlighting the country’s reliance on imported goods such as carpets, garments, and toys, Shri Dhankhar pointed out that this trend not only exports vital foreign exchange but also hampers domestic entrepreneurship. He appealed to businesses to support local production, which would create jobs and foster homegrown innovation.
Speaking at the Swarna Bharat Trust in Venkatachalam, Shri Dhankhar underscored the urgent need for responsible resource consumption. He called for restraint in using natural resources, advocating necessity-based consumption over financially-driven excess. He warned that reckless spending driven by economic power could endanger the future of upcoming generations.
Reflecting on the export of raw materials like iron ore without value addition, Shri Dhankhar lamented the missed opportunities for creating jobs and strengthening the nation’s economic fabric. He urged the country to prioritize long-term national interests over short-term financial gains, expressing concern over how such practices weaken India’s economic foundation.
Shri Dhankhar called for a united effort to prioritize national interests above political, personal, and economic agendas, expressing confidence in a gradual but necessary shift towards this mindset.
Citing a verse from the Rig Veda, “संगच्छध्वं संवदध्वं सं वो,” he encouraged collective unity, stating, “Let us move forward together, speak with one voice, and always work in the nation’s interest.” He also stressed the urgency of tangible actions that can make a real difference in the lives of ordinary citizens who have grown disillusioned.
In closing, Shri Dhankhar expressed deep respect for former Vice President Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu, commending his unwavering dedication to national welfare and his lifelong commitment to rural development. Praising his principles, Shri Dhankhar noted that while emulating these ideals is commendable, matching Shri Naidu’s contributions is challenging. He remarked, “His life is a testament to service, rooted in rural India, and the essence of civilization in action.”
