During his historic visit to Ukraine on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended an invitation to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to visit India. The invitation was made during a series of extensive discussions in Kyiv.
In response inquiry about the invitation, Zelensky expressed enthusiasm about the prospect of visiting India. He indicated that he would be “happy” to make the trip, though the timing would depend on the situation in Ukraine, which is currently engaged in conflict with Russia.
Zelensky highlighted the importance of not delaying strategic dialogues and expressed a desire to meet with Modi and see India. He remarked on the significance of India as a “big and great country” and lamented that the ongoing war has limited his ability to explore new places. Despite these challenges, Zelensky stressed the importance of such diplomatic engagements and expressed hope that a visit could be arranged when conditions permit.
He emphasized the potential for India to play a key role in diplomatic efforts and reiterated his willingness to visit as soon as the Indian government and Prime Minister Modi are ready to host him.
During the visit, PM Modi also addressed the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, urging both nations to engage in dialogue without delay to resolve the war. Modi affirmed India’s commitment to peace, drawing on the country’s heritage of non-violence, and offered India’s support in contributing to a peaceful resolution.
This visit marks the first time an Indian Prime Minister has traveled to Ukraine since the country’s independence in 1991, coming shortly after Modi’s discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
