On Saturday, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) made headlines with the arrest of Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. Ghosh is now facing serious charges in connection with the rape and murder of a junior doctor at the hospital on August 9. Tala Police Station SHO Abhijit Mondal was also detained in connection with the case.
Both Ghosh and Mondal are scheduled to appear before the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) Court in Sealdah on Sunday. The CBI alleges that the two men were involved in tampering with evidence, disturbing the crime scene, and obstructing the investigation. They are also accused of criminal conspiracy and breaching official regulations.
The shocking incident, which involved the brutal assault and killing of a young female doctor, ignited widespread outrage across West Bengal and beyond. Ghosh has been placed in solitary confinement at the Presidency Central Jail following a special court’s decision to remand him in judicial custody until September. The CBI has also revealed that Ghosh was implicated in financial misconduct, including siphoning off funds and making 84 illegal appointments between 2022 and 2023.
Earlier, on September 2, Ghosh was arrested by the CBI for alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College. The Calcutta High Court had directed a CBI investigation into these matters in light of the tragic incident involving the junior doctor.
