As India leverages its independent foreign policy, it is positioning itself as a potential peacemaker in the prolonged Russia-Ukraine conflict. Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent landmark visit to Ukraine, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval is set to travel to Moscow this week to engage in critical peace discussions.
In July, PM Modi had also visited Russia, where he engaged in comprehensive talks with President Vladimir Putin. India’s stance, rooted in a tradition of diplomacy and non-alignment, offers a unique third axis in the global arena, especially as Western powers face a stalemate with Russia, which is backed by China.
PM Modi has emphasized India’s commitment to peace, quoting, “We have chosen the side of peace. We come from the land of Buddha where there is no place for war,” during his visit to Ukraine. His diplomatic efforts have been met with positive receptions from both Russian President Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Following his visit to Ukraine, PM Modi maintained communication with both leaders, underlining India’s readiness to contribute to resolving the conflict. This was further demonstrated when he announced a phone conversation with President Putin on August 27, 2024, discussing insights from his recent visit and reaffirming India’s dedication to a peaceful resolution.
Ajit Doval’s forthcoming visit to Moscow is a direct outcome of the diplomatic engagements initiated by PM Modi. While specific details of Doval’s itinerary are yet to be revealed, it is expected that he will present a peace plan developed with input from Modi’s recent interactions with both Russian and Ukrainian leaders.
The significance of India’s role in this global issue has been noted by various international figures. Former UNSC chief Kishore Mahbubani remarked on India’s growing geopolitical influence, highlighting its rare ability to engage diplomatically with both Russia and Ukraine. Additionally, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and the White House have recognized the potential of India’s efforts to facilitate a resolution to the ongoing conflict.
As the war between Russia and Ukraine continues, India’s active involvement in diplomatic efforts signals its rising prominence on the global stage.
