K.C. Tyagi’s resignation as the Janata Dal (United) national spokesperson has been attributed to his outspoken views on sensitive issues, which reportedly created tensions within the NDA alliance. JD(U) insiders clarified that the BJP did not pressure the party for Tyagi’s removal; instead, the decision was made independently by party leader Nitish Kumar.
Tyagi, who stepped down from his spokesperson role on Sunday, revealed that he had initially resigned last year but was asked to continue. He mentioned that the demanding role, requiring availability from early morning to late evening, had prompted his decision to step aside for younger party members.
Sources within JD(U) indicated that Tyagi’s recent comments on controversial topics, including the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and Israel-Hamas conflict, put the party in a difficult position. According to a senior JD(U) leader, Tyagi had begun making statements on these issues without consulting the party leadership, which complicated the party’s stance within the NDA alliance.
Tyagi’s criticism of the government’s lateral entry scheme and his joint statement with Opposition leaders on the Israel-Palestine conflict were particularly problematic. His comments on the latter, which involved a joint statement condemning Israel’s actions, were seen as inconsistent with the typical party stance on foreign policy and national security.
Despite Tyagi’s attempt to defend his positions as aligned with JD(U) values, his approach to sensitive issues and the subsequent controversies contributed to his departure from the spokesperson role. The party aims to balance its role within the NDA while maximizing benefits for Bihar as it heads towards the 2025 Assembly elections.
