In a major development, the Supreme Court has granted bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who had been imprisoned for the last six months in connection with the alleged liquor policy scam. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader had previously been granted temporary bail for a few days ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, but now he is set to leave jail after securing bail from the Enforcement Directorate case.
Despite his release, Kejriwal faces restrictions on his duties. He cannot visit his office, and the Delhi Secretariat, or sign official files without the consent of Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena. In a session held Friday morning, Justice Ujjal Bhuyan and Justice Surya Kant delivered separate judgments on Kejriwal’s two bail pleas but agreed that he should be released.
Highlights from Arvind Kejriwal’s Bail:
After walking out of Tihar jail, Arvind Kejriwal addressed his supporters and spoke about his time behind bars:
They thought they could break my courage by putting me in jail, but my resolve has only grown stronger. I’ve faced many challenges, but with God’s help, I have always stood firm. I will continue to fight against those who hinder India’s progress and attempt to divide the country.
In his first public statement outside the jail, Kejriwal expressed his determination to stand firm against forces that he believes are obstructing the nation’s development.
