Just weeks after the tragic death of 26-year-old chartered accountant Anna Sebastian Perayil, who was employed at Ernst & Young’s Pune office, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s comments on stress management have stirred controversy.
Speaking at an event at a medical college in Chennai, Sitharaman highlighted the need for inner strength to cope with professional pressure, attributing it to spiritual guidance and divinity. Without directly mentioning Ernst & Young, she referred to the recent news involving a young CA who succumbed to work pressure, stating that the incident had been in the headlines for a few days.
Sitharaman emphasized that while academic institutions prepare students to excel, families play a crucial role in equipping them with mental resilience. She believes that inner strength, which she called Atma Shakti, can only be nurtured through spirituality and faith.
Families need to teach children that whatever job they do, they must build inner strength to handle pressure. This strength comes from divinity, Sitharaman said. Educational institutions should introduce elements of spirituality, helping children develop the resilience needed for both personal growth and the country’s progress.
Anna’s Mother’s Response
Anna’s mother, Anita Augustine, shared a heartbreaking account of her daughter’s final days in a letter to Ernst & Young India Chairman Rajiv Memani. She pointed out the firm’s toxic work culture and revealed that her daughter died just four months after joining the company.
Anita described how Anna, despite her best efforts, was overwhelmed by constant deadlines and late-night work demands. Anna would come home utterly exhausted, sometimes collapsing without even changing her clothes, only to be bombarded with more requests for reports. She was determined to succeed and learn, but the pressure was simply too much, Anita wrote.
Anna’s tragic death has sparked discussions around work-life balance and corporate accountability, with many calling for changes in how companies address employee well-being and stress management.
