Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Wednesday that India aims to become a global hub for producing, utilizing, and exporting green hydrogen. Speaking at the International Conference on Green Hydrogen India 2024, organized by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) alongside various governmental departments, PM Modi highlighted the nation’s ambition to lead the green hydrogen revolution.
He emphasized that the National Green Hydrogen Mission drives innovation, infrastructure development, industry expansion, and substantial investment. “We are investing heavily in cutting-edge research and development. Collaborations between industry and academia are being fostered, and start-ups in the green hydrogen space are being actively supported,” said PM Modi.
The Prime Minister also underscored the potential for green hydrogen to create a vibrant ecosystem of green jobs, stating that efforts are underway to equip the youth with the necessary skills for this emerging sector.
Acknowledging the urgency of climate action, PM Modi pointed out that the impact of climate change is already being felt across the globe. “The time for action is now. Energy transition and sustainability have become core themes in global policy discussions,” he noted.
He further highlighted India’s commitment to climate goals, proudly stating that India was the first among G20 nations to achieve its Paris Agreement targets on green energy—nine years ahead of schedule. Over the last decade, the country has seen a 300% increase in non-fossil fuel capacity, with solar energy capacity surging by over 3,000%.
Green hydrogen is a promising solution for decarbonizing hard-to-electrify industries like refineries, steel, and heavy transportation. It also holds potential as a storage solution for surplus renewable energy. The National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched in 2023, positions India to lead the charge in this crucial energy transition.
PM Modi concluded by calling for collective action, stating, “Humanity has always overcome challenges through innovative solutions. Let us unite to accelerate the development and deployment of green hydrogen, ensuring a sustainable future for all.
