Russian President Vladimir Putin has suggested that India, China, and Brazil could play key roles as mediators in potential peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. Speaking on September 5, 2024, Putin expressed readiness for dialogue, indicating that the preliminary agreements reached during early talks in Istanbul could form the basis for future discussions.
Putin’s comments follow Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visits to Moscow and Ukraine, which have highlighted India’s active interest in resolving the conflict. During these visits, Modi emphasized India’s readiness to contribute to peace efforts and urged both Russia and Ukraine to engage in negotiations without delay.
Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov also noted that India could facilitate dialogue, given its strong diplomatic relations with both Russia and Ukraine. Peskov highlighted Modi’s ability to engage with key players and suggested that India’s influence could help move the conflict toward a peaceful resolution.
Despite these discussions, Peskov acknowledged that there are no current plans for Modi to mediate directly. He pointed out that the conditions for meaningful talks are not yet in place.
Putin reiterated that Russia remains open to negotiations based on the Istanbul agreements from 2022, which were never fully implemented. He criticized Western powers for allegedly derailing the deal, accusing them of seeking a strategic defeat for Russia.
Putin’s remarks come amid ongoing tensions, including a recent significant cross-border incursion by Ukraine into Russia’s Kursk region. Despite these developments, Putin remains firm on the terms of the initial agreements as a foundation for any future talks.
