U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has reportedly urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to avoid further escalation in the ongoing Ukraine conflict, according to a Washington Post report from November 10, 2024. Representatives from Trump’s team indicated that he is open to further discussions to help bring a swift resolution to the war.
The conversation occurred on Thursday, November 7, 2024, just days after Trump’s unexpected victory over Democratic opponent Kamala Harris. Speaking from his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, Trump reportedly highlighted the presence of American military forces in Europe and expressed his desire to explore peaceful solutions to end the nearly three-year conflict.
While Trump’s team has not commented directly, Kremlin officials noted “positive signals” in his approach to the Ukraine crisis. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov remarked, “At least he’s talking about peace, not confrontation.”
Trump’s election has sparked speculation about potential shifts in U.S. policy, as he has consistently advocated for a quick end to the conflict and questioned the extensive financial support that Washington has provided to Kyiv.
On Wednesday, November 6, Trump also spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who was accompanied by billionaire Elon Musk. Zelensky described the conversation as “excellent,” with both leaders committing to close dialogue and enhanced cooperation.
Meanwhile, the outgoing Biden administration has pledged to provide as much assistance as possible to Ukraine before Trump’s inauguration on January 20, 2025. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan stated that the remaining U.S. aid, totaling around $6 billion, would be directed to strengthen Ukraine’s position both on the battlefield and in possible peace negotiations.
Russia has indicated a willingness to discuss Trump’s ideas for ending the conflict. However, a quick resolution may require concessions from Kyiv, potentially involving the relinquishment of territory lost to Russia. Former Trump adviser Bryan Lanza suggested that Ukraine might need to reconsider its aspirations for Crimea, though Trump’s team clarified that Lanza’s comments do not represent the President-elect’s official stance.
With Europe closely monitoring the situation, Zelensky has firmly opposed any territorial concessions, arguing that giving up land would only encourage further Russian aggression—a sentiment shared by several European allies. Trump reportedly mentioned territorial issues briefly in his conversation with Putin, though specific details were not disclosed.
In recent weeks, both Ukraine and Russia have taken strategic steps, with Ukraine reclaiming Russian-held areas and Russia making advances in parts of Ukraine. Over the weekend, both nations launched significant drone attacks, with Russia deploying 145 drones against Ukraine and Ukraine targeting Moscow with 34 drones.
