The Government of India, through the Department of Health and Family Welfare, is actively strengthening the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NP-NCD) under the National Health Mission (NHM). This initiative aims to address the rising burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) across the country, particularly in underserved and deprived areas.
Key Infrastructure Developments
Under the NP-NCD, the government has established:
- 770 District NCD Clinics for diagnosis and management of chronic diseases.
- 372 District Day Care Centres for outpatient care and treatment.
- 233 Cardiac Care Units for addressing heart-related ailments.
- 6,410 Community Health Centre (CHC) NCD Clinics to provide accessible healthcare services at the community level.
Population-Based Screening and Prevention
A comprehensive initiative has been rolled out for population-based screening, prevention, and management of common NCDs, including:
- Diabetes
- Hypertension
- Oral Cancer
- Breast Cancer
- Cervical Cancer
These services are now an integral part of primary healthcare under the NHM, ensuring early detection and timely treatment through routine screenings and community engagement.
Awareness and Promotion of Healthy Lifestyles
The programme emphasizes public awareness and the promotion of healthy living. Initiatives include:
- Observance of health days dedicated to NCD awareness.
- Use of social media to disseminate information about healthy habits and disease prevention.
- Financial support for awareness campaigns provided to States and Union Territories as part of their Programme Implementation Plans (PIPs).
Role of ASHAs in Community Engagement
Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) play a vital role in creating awareness about NCDs at the grassroots level. Their efforts include:
- Educating communities on the importance of nutritious diets, regular exercise, and avoidance of tobacco and alcohol.
- Encouraging individuals to undergo regular health check-ups and screenings for early detection of diseases.
- Conducting home visits, organizing group meetings, and participating in health campaigns to promote preventive healthcare practices.
Government Commitment
Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Shri Prataprao Jadhav, highlighted these initiatives in a written reply in the Lok Sabha. The government’s comprehensive approach under the NP-NCD reflects its commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure, enhancing early diagnosis, and empowering communities through health promotion and awareness, particularly in deprived regions.
