In a significant step toward promoting winter sports in India, the government has approved the participation of an 88-member Indian contingent at the 9th Asian Winter Games (AWG) 2025, set to take place in Harbin, China, from February 7 to 14. This contingent comprises 59 athletes and 29 team officials, marking a historic moment for Indian winter sports.
For the first time, full financial support is being provided under the Assistance to National Sports Federations (ANSF) Scheme to athletes competing in Alpine Skiing, Cross-Country Skiing, Figure Skating, Short Track Speed Skating, and Speed Skating (Long Track). This decision reflects the government’s commitment to nurturing talent in disciplines that have traditionally received limited attention in the country.
By formally extending financial backing to the Indian team at the Asian Winter Games, the government has taken a crucial step toward fostering a more competitive winter sports ecosystem. This initiative ensures that talented athletes receive the necessary resources to compete at the highest level and showcases a structured, merit-based approach to sports governance. The move also aligns with India’s broader vision of expanding its presence in diverse sporting arenas and paving the way for stronger performances in global competitions.
The Asian Winter Games provide an invaluable platform for Indian athletes to test their skills against top contenders from across the continent. Their participation in these high-stakes events is not only a matter of pride but also a stepping stone toward future international success. As India takes this leap forward, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has extended its best wishes to all participating athletes, reaffirming its commitment to supporting and strengthening winter sports in the country.
