The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India, has taken suo motu cognisance of a media report concerning the tragic death of a lineman employed by the Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN). The incident occurred on January 21, 2025, in Sikanderpur Badha, Gurugram, Haryana, when the lineman was electrocuted while working on an electricity transformer. According to reports, the electricity supply was resumed while the victim was still performing his duties, resulting in his death on the spot.
The Commission, deeming the incident a serious violation of human rights, has issued notices to the Chairman of DHBVN and the Commissioner of Police, Gurugram, requesting a detailed report within two weeks. The report is expected to include:
1. The current status of the FIR filed in connection with the case.
2. Details of any compensation provided to the victim’s family.
As per a media report dated January 22, 2025, the victim’s family has alleged gross negligence on the part of the electricity department, which they claim led to the fatal accident.
The NHRC has expressed concern over the circumstances leading to the incident and has emphasized the need for accountability and corrective measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The Commission has also highlighted the importance of ensuring adequate support and justice for the victim’s family.
