US President Donald Trump announced that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the United States in February 2025. The statement came after the leaders held their first telephonic conversation since Trump assumed office for his second term on January 20.
Speaking to reporters, President Trump said, “Prime Minister Modi will visit the US sometime in February,” as quoted by news agency Reuters. This conversation comes amid diplomatic efforts to facilitate an early meeting between the two leaders.
During the call, the two leaders discussed several topics, including immigration. President Trump mentioned that India would “do the right thing” regarding the return of illegal immigrants. This follows Trump’s strong stance on curbing illegal immigration, which played a significant role in his political resurgence.
PM Modi’s most recent US visit was in September 2024 for the Quad Leaders’ Summit hosted by then-President Joe Biden. The summit was attended by leaders from Australia and Japan, alongside India. Modi also addressed the United Nations’ “Summit of the Future” during that visit.
Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar represented India at Trump’s inauguration in Washington, D.C.
According to a White House statement, Trump and Modi had a “productive” call discussing plans to strengthen bilateral ties and advance cooperation in areas such as the Indo-Pacific region and the Quad partnership. The statement also confirmed discussions about Modi’s upcoming visit to the White House, emphasizing the strategic partnership between the two nations.
This development highlights the deepening ties between India and the United States, with both leaders committed to fostering collaboration on global and regional challenges.
