In preparation for the Maha Kumbh Mela scheduled to begin in January 2025, Indian Railways has unveiled innovative digital solutions to enhance passenger convenience and manage the influx of pilgrims in Prayagraj. These initiatives include QR-coded jackets for volunteers and user-friendly apps to streamline ticket booking and other services.
Key Features of the Initiative
Railway officials from the North Central Railway’s Prayagraj division will don fluorescent green jackets embedded with QR codes. Pilgrims can scan these codes to download the Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS) app, enabling them to book unreserved tickets digitally, bypassing long queues. This initiative aims to reduce crowding at the city’s multiple railway stations during the festival.
In addition to the QR-enabled system, Indian Railways has introduced the Mahakumbh Rail Seva 2025 app and web portal. This platform offers a comprehensive guide to trains, guest houses, helpline numbers, and more, ensuring a seamless experience for travelers.
Infrastructure Enhancements
Over 560 ticketing counters will be operational, capable of issuing up to 10 lakh tickets daily.
More than 10,000 regular trains and 3,000 special trains will be deployed during the Kumbh Mela period.
28 guest houses, accommodating up to 1.3 lakh devotees, have been established to provide comfortable lodging.
Additional Support
A toll-free helpline, 1800-4199-139, has been active since November 1, 2024, and will operate 24×7 starting January 1, 2025. Call operators proficient in 12 languages, including Tamil, Marathi, Bengali, and Odia, will assist devotees.
Railway announcements will be made in 12 languages, ensuring accessibility for pilgrims from across India.
Technology and Safety Measures
The Uttar Pradesh government is complementing these efforts with AI-enabled cameras and RFID wristbands to monitor and manage the vast crowds. Drones will also mark the festival’s opening and closing ceremonies.
With these initiatives, Indian Railways is ensuring a safe, convenient, and technologically advanced experience for millions of devotees attending the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025.
