In a significant step towards increasing awareness about affordable healthcare, Shri Amit Agrawal, Secretary of the Department of Pharmaceuticals, Government of India, inaugurated a model Jan Aushadhi Kendra at Dilli Haat, INA, New Delhi. The initiative aims to educate citizens about the Pradhan Mantri Bharatiya Janaushadhi Pariyojna (PMBJP), a scheme dedicated to providing high-quality medicines at significantly lower prices.
The event witnessed an interactive session where visitors to Dilli Haat learned about the benefits of generic medicines available through Jan Aushadhi Kendras. Shri Ravi Dadhich, CEO of the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Bureau of India (PMBI), was also present, reinforcing the government’s commitment to expanding affordable healthcare access.
Recognizing the importance of generic medicines, the government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has been celebrating March 7 as “Jan Aushadhi Diwas” every year. This occasion highlights the impact of the scheme and encourages wider adoption of low-cost, high-quality medicines. In keeping with this tradition, a series of events will take place across the country from March 1 to March 7, 2025, to spread awareness about the initiative.
As of January 31, 2025, India has established 15,000 Jan Aushadhi Kendras, ensuring that affordable medicines reach the masses. These centers provide a range of 2,047 medicines and 300 types of surgical products at prices 50% to 80% lower than their branded counterparts. Looking ahead, the government has set an ambitious target of opening 25,000 such centers by March 31, 2027, reinforcing its commitment to accessible and affordable healthcare for all.
The inauguration at Dilli Haat serves as a reminder of the transformative potential of the Jan Aushadhi initiative. By making essential medicines more affordable, the government is not only easing the financial burden on families but also promoting a healthier nation.
