In a significant step toward modernizing parliamentary operations, the Lok Sabha Secretariat and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop ‘Sansad Bhashini,’ an AI-powered multilingual initiative. The agreement, signed in the presence of Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla and Union Minister for MEITY Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, marks a transformative move aimed at enhancing accessibility, efficiency, and inclusivity within India’s parliamentary framework.
The Sansad Bhashini initiative seeks to integrate artificial intelligence into parliamentary documentation and communication, ensuring seamless multilingual support for debates, reports, and official documents. This AI-driven platform will revolutionize how parliamentary records are accessed, making them available in multiple Indian languages. By leveraging advanced translation, transcription, and chatbot technologies, the initiative aims to create a more inclusive and technology-driven legislative environment.
One of the most groundbreaking aspects of this initiative is its AI-based translation capability, which will allow the seamless conversion of parliamentary debates, committee reports, and other crucial documents into regional languages. This will ensure that linguistic diversity is respected and that information is accessible to all citizens, researchers, and members of academia. Additionally, the introduction of an AI-powered chatbot on the Parliament’s website will enable Members of Parliament (MPs) and officials to quickly retrieve procedural rules and documents, significantly reducing time spent searching for critical legislative information. The chatbot is designed to continuously learn from user interactions, improving its efficiency and accuracy over time.
Another key feature of Sansad Bhashini is its real-time speech-to-text conversion and live interpretation tool, which will transcribe spoken debates into text in various Indian languages. This advanced system will include background noise reduction, customizable vocabulary, and optimized documentation tools, ensuring precise and efficient record-keeping. Furthermore, the initiative will introduce real-time speech-to-speech conversion, allowing instant translations of parliamentary discussions and facilitating more effective decision-making through automatic summarization of lengthy debates.
Union Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw expressed his gratitude to Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla for his leadership in driving this initiative forward. He emphasized that Sansad Bhashini would play a crucial role in transforming parliamentary operations by integrating cutting-edge AI solutions, enhancing multilingual accessibility, and strengthening India’s reputation in technology-driven governance. Shri Vaishnaw’s optimism was echoed by other dignitaries present at the event, including Shri Utpal Kumar Singh, Secretary-General of the Lok Sabha, and Shri Gaurav Goyal, Joint Secretary of the Lok Sabha Secretariat, who formally signed the MoU.
This initiative is a testament to India’s commitment to leveraging technological advancements for governance and democracy. By breaking language barriers and making parliamentary records more accessible, Sansad Bhashini is set to empower legislators, researchers, and the general public, fostering greater transparency and participation in the country’s democratic process. The collaboration between the Lok Sabha Secretariat and MEITY reflects a forward-thinking approach that not only modernizes legislative operations but also ensures that India’s linguistic and cultural diversity remains at the heart of governance.
