The recently concluded Maha Kumbh 2025 in Prayagraj, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, saw an overwhelming influx of devotees, with over 66 crore people arriving from across India and abroad. Amidst the massive crowds, thousands of individuals became separated from their families, leading to distress and anxiety. However, thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Uttar Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, an astounding 54,357 lost individuals were successfully reunited with their families.
A key factor in this large-scale reunification was the Digital Khoya Paya Kendra, an initiative designed to swiftly locate and reconnect separated devotees. This centre alone facilitated the reunion of over 35,000 people, many of whom were women and children. The Uttar Pradesh police also played a crucial role, ensuring the safe return of individuals not just from different parts of India but also from Nepal.
In addition to the government’s efforts, several NGOs stepped in to support the initiative. Organisations like Bharat Seva Kendra and Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Smriti Samiti, under the leadership of Umesh Chandra Tiwari, played a significant role in locating and reuniting 19,274 lost individuals, including 18 missing children. Their dedicated service provided immense relief to worried families.
The reunification efforts were particularly effective during major bathing festivals. During the Amrit Snan Parv on Makar Sankranti, 598 people were reunited, while Mauni Amavasya saw 8,725 successful reconnections. Similarly, during Basant Panchami, 864 devotees found their loved ones again. Additionally, 24,896 people who got separated on other festival days and regular days were brought back to their families, making the total number of reunifications reach 35,083 by the end of the Maha Kumbh.
The Maha Kumbh 2025, held after 144 years, was a momentous occasion, bringing together millions in an atmosphere of faith and devotion. While it was a deeply spiritual event, the logistical challenges of managing such an enormous crowd were immense. The Uttar Pradesh government’s meticulous planning, along with the unwavering commitment of law enforcement agencies and voluntary organisations, helped ensure that those who got lost in the sea of devotees were not left behind.
The gratitude expressed by reunited families was heartfelt, with many devotees acknowledging Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s leadership in implementing such an efficient system. The Maha Kumbh was not just a religious gathering; it became a testament to effective governance, community support, and the enduring human spirit of care and compassion.
