Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), one of India’s foremost producers of coking coal, has made a heartfelt and meaningful contribution to the nation’s healthcare system by expanding its medical education programs at the Central Hospital Dhanbad (CHD). In a development that promises to shape the future of specialist healthcare in India, the hospital has introduced a new specialization in Ophthalmology under the Diplomate of National Board (DNB) program. With this addition, CHD now offers training in five essential medical disciplines, making it the most comprehensive DNB training center among all subsidiaries of Coal India.
The DNB programs currently offered at CHD include General Medicine (4 seats), General Surgery (2 seats), Anaesthesia (2 seats across post-MBBS and post-diploma courses), Family Medicine (2 seats), and the newly introduced Ophthalmology (2 seats). These rigorous programs, accredited by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS), are held to the same high standards as MD/MS courses, ensuring that students receive quality training that equips them to meet real-world challenges in healthcare.
What makes this effort particularly impactful is BCCL’s commitment to nurturing talent from within. Half of the available seats in these programs are reserved for internal doctors from CIL and its subsidiaries, allowing these professionals to grow and specialize further. The remaining seats are open to aspiring candidates from across the country, creating an inclusive, merit-based learning environment that reflects the true spirit of nation-building.
This initiative is more than just an academic expansion—it is a reflection of BCCL’s broader dedication to corporate social responsibility. By investing in medical education and infrastructure, the company is helping to bridge critical gaps in healthcare delivery, especially in underserved regions like Dhanbad and its neighboring areas. At the same time, it supports the energy sector’s backbone by ensuring the well-being of its workers and their families.
BCCL’s Chairman and Managing Director, Shri Samiran Dutta, expressed pride in the hospital’s evolving role, stating that CHD now stands among the leading healthcare institutions within the Coal India family. This step forward reinforces the company’s vision of building a robust and compassionate healthcare system—one that not only powers industries but also cares deeply for the communities around it.
