Srinagar: A moderate earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale struck Jammu and Kashmir in the early hours of Monday, shaking several districts across the Valley and triggering brief panic among residents.
Despite the wide area affected by the tremor, authorities confirmed that no immediate reports of loss of life, injuries, or major property damage had been received till the filing of this report.
Tremors Felt Across the Valley
The earthquake was felt across multiple districts, including Srinagar, Baramulla, Sopore, Ganderbal, Pulwama and adjoining areas. Residents in parts of north and central Kashmir reported noticeable shaking lasting a few seconds.
The impact zone also extended into areas across the Line of Control, with tremors reportedly felt in parts of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir as well.
Officials said the quake was shallow in nature, which often causes tremors to be felt more strongly even at moderate magnitudes.
Residents Jolted Awake
Many residents said they were jolted awake by the sudden shaking, especially in Srinagar and nearby towns. In several neighbourhoods, doors, windows and household items rattled, prompting people to rush outdoors in fear.
“The tremor was brief but strong enough to wake us up,” said a Srinagar resident. “People stepped out of their homes immediately as a precaution.”
Emergency services and local administrations remained on alert, though no distress calls were reported in the immediate aftermath.
Official Confirmation and Monitoring
Preliminary data from the Android Earthquake Alerts System confirmed the timing and magnitude of the quake. Disaster management authorities said the situation was being closely monitored.
Officials advised citizens to remain calm and follow standard safety protocols in case of aftershocks, although no secondary tremors were reported by mid-morning.
Kashmir’s Seismic Vulnerability
Jammu and Kashmir lies in a seismically active zone and has witnessed frequent earthquakes over the years. Experts note that most tremors in the region are low to moderate in intensity but serve as reminders of the Valley’s vulnerability.
Seismologists have consistently stressed the importance of earthquake-resistant construction and public awareness to reduce risks.
Situation Remains Normal
As of Monday morning, life across the Valley continued as usual. Schools, offices and markets functioned normally, and traffic movement remained unaffected.
Authorities reiterated that there was no cause for alarm but urged people to stay informed through official channels.
