62% Bihar Election Candidates Hold Graduate Degrees

RR Team, October 28, 2025October 28, 2025
Patna, October 28, 2025: Bihar’s upcoming Assembly elections are witnessing a remarkable shift a growing number of candidates come armed with higher educational qualifications, reflecting a changing trend in state politics.
According to affidavits and nomination documents filed by contestants, around 62% of Bihar Assembly election candidates hold a graduate or higher degree. This marks a significant jump in educational representation compared to previous polls, as both the NDA and INDIA bloc have fielded highly educated leaders to connect with the state’s growing aspirational electorate.

Among these, 24 candidates possess advanced academic qualifications such as engineering and PhD degrees. The election office data highlights that 17 candidates hold LLB degrees, 12 have engineering backgrounds, 12 are PhD scholars, five hold MBBS degrees, three have completed MBAs, and two possess MPhil degrees. Meanwhile, about 8% of contestants have not completed matriculation, though some are literate or have studied up to middle school.

Professional and Academic Profiles Stand Out

BJP has notably fielded doctors like Dr Sunil Kumar (Biharsharif) and Dr Siyaram Singh (Barh), while the RJD has nominated medical professionals including Dr Karishma (Parsa) and Dr Sanjeev Kumar (Parbatta). Engineering graduates include BJP’s Vijay Kumar Sinha (Lakhisarai) and CPI’s Vishwanath Chaudhary (Rajgir).

The JD(U) list includes technocrats such as Ruhel Ranjan (Islampur) and Ajit Kumar (Kanti), while RJD’s Ravindra Kumar Singh (Mahnar) and Congress’s Sanjeev Singh (Vaishali) represent the engineering class. This diversity in technical and professional backgrounds suggests parties’ efforts to project competence and modernization.

Academicians and Researchers in the Fray

Candidates holding Doctor of Letters (DLitt) degrees have drawn particular attention this election season. These include BJP leaders Samrat Choudhary (Tarapur) and Murari Mohan Jha (Kevati), alongside RJD’s Ramanuj Kumar (Sonepur). MPhil degree holders include CPI (ML)’s Dhananjay (Bhore) and BJP’s Sujit Kumar (Gaura Bauram).

The PhD category is equally distinguished, featuring names like BJP’s Dr Sanjeev Chaurasiya, RJD’s Dr Ramanand Yadav, Congress’s Dr Indradeep Chandravanshi, and JD(U)’s Vinay Chaudhary. Their presence reinforces the growing value placed on education and expertise within political circles.

Shift Toward Educated Leadership

Observers note that this trend toward academic excellence marks a gradual transformation in Bihar’s political landscape, once dominated by leaders with limited formal education. Political analysts believe this change reflects evolving voter expectations for capable, informed governance.

RJD’s Amar Paswan (Bochaha), JD(U)’s Komal Singh (Gaighat), and BJP’s Sanjay Saraogi (Darbhanga) represent the rising class of MBA-qualified leaders who combine administrative and managerial skills with grassroots connect.

While educational degrees alone don’t guarantee good governance, experts argue that the inclusion of such candidates enhances policy debates and decision-making quality. As the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections unfold, the state’s voters will judge whether education translates into effective leadership and development outcomes.
