The engines will be produced at HAL’s Koraput division and are expected to ensure the continued operational effectiveness of the Indian Air Force’s Su-30 fleet. According to the contract, HAL will deliver 30 engines per year, with the entire supply scheduled to be completed over the next eight years.
The Defence Ministry highlighted that the manufacturing process would involve collaboration with India’s broader defense manufacturing sector, including MSMEs and both public and private industries. HAL plans to increase indigenization to 63% in the delivery program, aiming for an average indigenous content of over 54% in the engines.
This deal comes in response to concerns over the dwindling number of IAF fighter squadrons, which currently stand at around 30, below the authorized strength of at least 42. Additionally, there have been delays in the supply of Tejas jets from HAL, underscoring the urgency of this new contract.
