Junior doctors in Kolkata have declared their intention to continue their protests, despite a Supreme Court directive. On September 9, the Court ordered the striking doctors to return to their duties by 5 p.m. on Tuesday or face potential consequences.
The junior doctors have been on strike at state-run hospitals for nearly a month, protesting the rape and murder of a colleague at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. They are demanding the resignation of West Bengal’s Health Secretary and the Director of Health Education (DHE). The medics also plan to stage a rally at the Swasthya Bhavan, the health department headquarters in Salt Lake, on September 10, 2024, at noon.
One of the protesting doctors stated, “Our demands remain unmet and justice for the victim is still pending. We will continue our strike and rally at Swasthya Bhavan until our demands for the resignation of the Health Secretary and DHE are addressed.”
