Two days after receiving a stern rebuke from the Supreme Court, doctors in Kolkata protesting the horrific rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital have agreed to engage with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The doctors have been vocal in their demand for justice for the victim and accountability for those involved in covering up the crime.
The Supreme Court had ordered the doctors to end their strike and return to work. Despite the directive, they continued their agitation beyond the court’s deadline on Tuesday, highlighting the gravity of their demands. However, in a recent development, the protesting doctors have decided to send an email to CM Banerjee’s office, requesting an appointment to discuss the issue.
The incident that sparked the protests involved the discovery of the victim’s body in the seminar hall of the hospital in a seminude state. The police arrested Sanjay Roy, a civil volunteer, who was seen entering the hall on CCTV at 4:03 a.m. Roy has since claimed innocence, stating that the woman was already unconscious when he entered the room.
Additionally, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken into custody the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, Sandip Ghosh, for alleged involvement in corrupt practices related to the case. Ghosh is accused of delaying the victim’s parents from seeing her body for three hours and ordering renovation work near the crime scene, raising concerns about his actions following the incident.
As the doctors continue to push for justice, their engagement with the Chief Minister could be a pivotal step in addressing the ongoing unrest and ensuring accountability in this tragic case.
