In a significant move on Friday, September 20, the Supreme Court took suo motu cognizance of the controversial remarks made by a Karnataka High Court judge. A five-judge bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, along with Justices Sanjiv Khanna, BR Gavai, Surya Kant, and Hrishikesh Roy, convened to address the issue and ordered a report from the Karnataka High Court.
The controversy stems from two viral video clips of Justice Vedavyasachar Srishananda, where he allegedly made objectionable remarks, one of which involved referring to a locality in Bangalore as “Pakistan” and another aimed at a woman advocate.
The Chief Justice noted the importance of maintaining decorum in the digital age, stating, “In this age of social media, we are closely watched, and we have to act accordingly.” The court has directed the Registrar General of the Karnataka High Court to submit a report after consulting with the Chief Justice of the Karnataka HC.
The Attorney General, R Venkataramani, was informed that guidelines may be established to handle such situations. The matter is scheduled for further consideration on Monday. Social media users, including prominent legal professionals, have expressed their disapproval of the judge’s remarks, adding fuel to the ongoing debate.
