20th Divya Kala Mela Kicks Off in Pune; ₹2 Crore in Loans Approved for Divyang Entrepreneurs

RR Team, September 28, 2024September 29, 2024

Pune, 28th September 2024 (PIB Delhi) – The 20th edition of the Divya Kala Mela, a national event dedicated to Divyangjan (persons with disabilities), was inaugurated today in Pune. Organized by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, this fair highlights the talents of Divyang entrepreneurs and artisans. The inauguration was attended by Maharashtra’s Governor, Shri C.P. Radhakrishnan, Union Minister Dr. Virendra Kumar, and MP Shrirang Appa Barne.

At the event, the National Divyangjan Finance and Development Corporation (NDFDC) sanctioned loans worth ₹2 crore, aimed at empowering Divyangjan by providing financial support for expanding their businesses. Additionally, motorized tricycles were distributed to eligible beneficiaries to enhance mobility.

Governor Radhakrishnan lauded the resilience and skills of Divyangjan, emphasizing the importance of their inclusion in the nation’s development. He praised the financial schemes offered by NDFDC, which provide loans between ₹50,000 and ₹50 lakh at low-interest rates (4%-9%) to support income-generating activities.

Union Minister Dr. Virendra Kumar underscored the significance of the Divya Kala Mela as a platform to market products created by Divyangjan. He revealed that nearly 1,450 participants have showcased their work at previous events, generating over ₹11.5 crore in revenue. Additionally, more than ₹10 crore in loans have been approved to support Divyang-run businesses.

The Minister also announced that job fairs are being held alongside the Mela, offering new employment opportunities for Divyangjan. Of the 1,400 candidates who have participated, 370 were shortlisted, with over 100 already securing job offers. These initiatives, he noted, are paving the way for more Divyangjan to join the workforce in reputable companies.

Having successfully hosted 19 similar events nationwide, the Divya Kala Mela in Pune continues to provide a vital platform for Divyang entrepreneurs to showcase their talents and gain exposure. The event features more than 100 Divyang artisans, entrepreneurs, and artists from 18 states and union territories, offering a wide variety of handmade goods and cultural performances. The Maharashtra edition particularly focuses on highlighting local Divyang artisans.

The fair, which runs until 6th October 2024, offers visitors the chance to purchase unique handmade items and enjoy diverse culinary experiences. Each evening from 6 to 9 PM, cultural performances by Divyang artists captivate audiences, featuring both local and national talent. On the closing day, a special presentation titled “Divya Kalashakti” will showcase exceptional performances by Divyang artists from across India.

The event, which includes 60 stalls, is open to the public with free entry, furthering the government’s commitment to the social and economic empowerment of Divyangjan. Additionally, the Mela provides a global stage for the talents and skills of these individuals, helping them build pathways toward self-reliance and recognition.

Shri Naveen Shah, CMD of NDFDC, concluded the event with a vote of thanks, while visually impaired artist Rajiv Ranjan served as the host for the proceedings.
