Navratri 2024 Day 7: Unveiling the Power of Maa Kalaratri – Significance, Rituals, Auspicious Timings & Color of the Day

RR Team, October 9, 2024October 9, 2024

Navratri 2024 Day 7: Celebrating the Fierce and Powerful Maa Kalaratri

The grand festival of Shardiya Navratri is a time of devotion and celebration across India. Spanning nine days, devotees worship Maa Durga and her nine divine forms. As we reach Day 7, or Saptami, the focus shifts to Maa Kalaratri, one of the fiercest incarnations of Goddess Durga. Here’s everything you need to know about Maa Kalaratri, her significance, puja rituals, auspicious timings, and more.

Who is Maa Kalaratri?

On the seventh day of Navratri, devotees honor Maa Kalaratri. Known as the most terrifying and powerful form of Goddess Parvati, she represents the destruction of evil. According to legend, when Maa Parvati shed her golden skin to defeat the demons, she transformed into the dark-skinned Maa Kalaratri.

With a fierce demeanor, Maa Kalaratri rides a donkey and is depicted with four hands. Two of her hands are in the Abhaya and Varada Mudra, which symbolize protection and blessings. In her other hand, she holds a sword and an iron hook.

The story of Maa Kalaratri is closely tied to the battle against the demons Shumbha, Nishumbha, Chanda, Munda, and Raktabeej. When the gods were defeated by these demons, they sought the help of Maa Parvati, who created Goddess Chandi to destroy them. While Goddess Chandi managed to kill many demons, she struggled with Chanda, Munda, and Raktabeej. To defeat them, Maa Parvati created Maa Kalaratri from her forehead. Maa Kalaratri not only slayed Chanda and Munda but also devised a way to kill Raktabeej, whose blood drops created clones. By drinking his blood, she stopped his rebirth and vanquished him.

The Significance of Worshipping Maa Kalaratri

Maa Kalaratri is revered for her ability to remove darkness and fear. Her name combines two words: Kala, meaning death, and Ratri, meaning night or darkness, signifying the end of ignorance and evil. She is also associated with the planet Shani (Saturn) and is believed to protect her devotees from its negative influence.

Worshipping Maa Kalaratri is believed to bring peace, safety, and prosperity by removing obstacles and negativity from devotees’ lives. Her fierce form reminds devotees that even in the face of adversity, the divine feminine can conquer all evil.

The Color of the Day: Royal Blue

On Day 7 of Navratri, devotees wear royal blue, symbolizing wealth and serenity. This rich hue is associated with peace and tranquility, aligning with the qualities of Maa Kalaratri, who brings calm after chaos.

Shubh Muhurat and Puja Vidhi for Day 7

To seek blessings from Maa Kalaratri, devotees follow specific rituals and perform the puja at the right time. According to Drik Panchang, on October 9, the Brahma Muhurat will be from 4:40 a.m. to 5:29 a.m., and the Vijaya Muhurat will be from 2:05 p.m. to 2:51 p.m. The Saptami Tithi, marking the seventh day, will start at 12:14 p.m. on October 9 and end at 12:31 p.m. on October 10.

When performing the puja, devotees should offer specific samagri (items), including flowers, incense, and a lamp, while reciting mantras dedicated to Maa Kalaratri. The offerings are made with utmost devotion, seeking protection and strength from the goddess.

Mantras and Stotras for Maa Kalaratri

Chanting mantras and prayers is a key part of worshipping Maa Kalaratri. Here are some of the important mantras and stotras

Stuti: Ya Devi Sarvabhuteshu Ma Kalaratri Rupena Samsthita
