The 70th National Film Awards ceremony took place in New Delhi today, where the President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, honored winners across various categories. The prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Lifetime Achievement Award for 2022 was presented to the legendary actor Shri Mithun Chakraborty, celebrating his remarkable contribution to Indian cinema over nearly five decades.
In her speech, the President emphasized the powerful role of films in reflecting the evolving artistic sense of society. She noted how films capture changing aspirations, emerging challenges, and rising awareness, while also portraying timeless values of love, compassion, and service. These core values, according to her, are what make our collective and individual lives meaningful, and were evident in the award-winning films.
Indian cinema, the President remarked, is not only the largest film industry in the world but also one of the most diverse, with films produced in numerous languages from all corners of the country. She congratulated all the winners and praised their contributions to the film industry, highlighting how these films serve as reflections of India’s rich traditions, diversity, and social experiences.
Congratulating Shri Mithun Chakraborty, the President applauded his versatility in portraying both intense and ordinary characters on screen, making a lasting impact with his energetic performances throughout his career. Mithun Chakraborty’s journey through cinema, she said, is a testament to his dedication to the craft.
The President also touched on an important issue: the underrepresentation of women in the film industry. Out of more than 85 awards distributed, only 15 were received by women. She encouraged the industry to make more efforts towards women-led development and equality.
She further emphasized the role of films and social media as powerful tools for societal change, urging greater collaboration between citizens, social organizations, and governments to ensure that meaningful cinema reaches a wider audience.
The 70th National Film Awards, with its celebration of artistic excellence, diversity, and social relevance, continues to be a symbol of the ever-evolving landscape of Indian cinema.
