Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who had canceled his election rallies in Maharashtra to address the growing unrest in Manipur, is expected to meet with top Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) officials today for a crucial round of discussions. This follows his review of the security situation in the state on November 17.
Violence erupted in the Imphal Valley districts on Saturday when mobs attacked the residences of multiple MLAs and destroyed property in response to the discovery of bodies of women and children. The situation has further escalated tensions between Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities.
In a statement, the Ministry of Home Affairs emphasized that security forces have been instructed to take all necessary measures to restore peace and order in the region. The Ministry also highlighted that violence from both sides of the conflict has resulted in loss of life and significant disruption.
The government has vowed to take strict action against any individuals involved in violent or disruptive activities.
BJP MLAs to Meet CM Biren Singh
Meanwhile, BJP MLAs are set to meet with Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh at 6:00 PM today to review the situation. This meeting comes a day after the National People’s Party (NPP), led by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, withdrew its support for Singh’s government over its failure to resolve the ongoing unrest.
The violence between Meitei and Kuki-Zo groups, which began in May 2023, has severely impacted normal life in the state, leading to months of unrest. Sangma criticized Singh for his inability to address the crisis, which has led to widespread displacement and loss of life.
Curfew Imposed, Internet Restrictions in Place
In response to the violence, a total curfew has been enforced in Imphal West and Imphal East. Internet and mobile data services have also been suspended in various parts of the state. Authorities have extended internet restrictions to the Jiribam and Pherzawal districts for the next two days as the government works to control the escalating situation.
