Tamil Actor Vijay Criticizes Amit Shah Over Ambedkar Remarks

RR Team, December 19, 2024December 19, 2024

Chennai: Tamil superstar and President of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), Vijay, has strongly criticised Union Home Minister Amit Shah following his controversial remarks on Dr. B.R. Ambedkar during a recent session in Parliament.

In a social media post on Wednesday, Vijay expressed his displeasure, stating that some individuals seem to be “allergic” to even mentioning Ambedkar’s name. He described Ambedkar as an “incomparable political and intellectual personality” whose contributions embody the spirit of freedom and equality for all citizens of India.

The actor-politician highlighted Ambedkar’s enduring legacy as a source of hope for marginalised communities and a symbol of resistance against social injustices. He pledged his unwavering admiration for Ambedkar, urging people to continue celebrating his name.

“Ambedkar… Ambedkar… Ambedkar… Let us keep chanting his name with joy in our hearts and on our lips,” Vijay wrote, reaffirming his commitment to Ambedkar’s ideals.

Widespread Backlash Against Amit Shah’s Comments

Vijay’s remarks come in response to Amit Shah’s statement in the Rajya Sabha on December 17, where Shah criticised the frequent invocation of Ambedkar’s name, suggesting that if the Opposition had taken God’s name as often, they might have reached heaven.

The Union Home Minister’s comments have sparked widespread criticism from opposition parties and activists across the country, with many accusing him of undermining the importance of Ambedkar’s contributions to India.

Vijay’s Connection to Ambedkar’s Ideals

Vijay has long associated Ambedkar’s ideology with the principles of his political party. During TVK’s first rally in Vikravandi, a region with a significant Dalit population, Vijay highlighted Ambedkar as one of the ideological pillars of the party.

The region is also a stronghold of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), led by Thol. Thirumavalavan, a prominent advocate for Dalit rights. Vijay’s growing political ambitions appear to align with the interests of marginalised communities, leveraging his popularity from socially relevant roles in his film career that resonate with these groups.

According to the 2011 Census, Dalits make up approximately 20% of Tamil Nadu’s population. Activists believe this number may have risen by about six per cent in recent years.

Rising Influence of Vijay’s TVK

As Vijay transitions from cinema to politics, his consistent focus on Dalit issues and Ambedkar’s ideals reflects his strategy to connect with marginalised groups. This approach, coupled with his massive fan base, positions TVK as a significant emerging force in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.
