Veer Bal Diwas 2024: Honoring the Bravery and Sacrifice of Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s Sons

RR Team, December 26, 2024December 26, 2024

Veer Bal Diwas is observed annually on December 26 to honor the extraordinary courage and sacrifice of Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s sons, particularly Sahibzada Zorawar Singh (aged 9) and Sahibzada Fateh Singh (aged 6). This day commemorates their martyrdom and unwavering faith in the face of tyranny.

The Declaration of Veer Bal Diwas

In 2022, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared December 26 as Veer Bal Diwas to pay tribute to the Sahibzadas’ supreme sacrifice. The announcement was made on January 9 during the Prakash Parv of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, ensuring the memory of these young martyrs remains eternal.

Historical Background

Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Sikh Guru, had four sons: Baba Ajit Singh, Baba Jujhar Singh, Baba Zorawar Singh, and Baba Fateh Singh. In 1699, Guru Gobind Singh founded the Khalsa Panth, with his sons actively participating in upholding its values.

By 1705, Punjab was under Mughal control, and the Mughals were determined to capture Guru Gobind Singh. During the ensuing conflict, Guru Gobind Singh’s family was separated. His wife, Mata Gujri, sought refuge with Zorawar Singh, Fateh Singh, and their cook, Gangu. However, Gangu betrayed them, leading to their capture by Nawab Wazir Khan of Sirhind.

The Ultimate Sacrifice

The elder Sahibzadas, Ajit Singh and Jujhar Singh, had already sacrificed their lives in battles defending their faith. Meanwhile, Nawab Wazir Khan subjected the younger Sahibzadas and Mata Gujri to immense suffering, attempting to coerce them into converting to Islam.

Despite the severe torture, the young boys remained steadfast in their beliefs. On December 26, 1705, they were sentenced to be bricked alive for refusing to renounce their faith. Their grandmother, Mata Gujri, passed away upon hearing the news of their execution.

Significance of Veer Bal Diwas

Veer Bal Diwas is a solemn reminder of the Sahibzadas’ unparalleled courage and unyielding faith. It serves as an inspiration to uphold values of truth, justice, and righteousness, even in the face of adversity.

Observance of Veer Bal Diwas

The day is marked by various events, including storytelling sessions, seminars, and exhibitions, recounting the Sahibzadas’ bravery. Educational institutions organize essay competitions and creative projects, while communities gather for prayer meetings and kirtans to honor their memory.

Veer Bal Diwas is not just a tribute to the past but a call to embrace the ideals of courage and selflessness, ensuring that the legacy of the Sahibzadas continues to inspire future generations.
