India Bids Farewell to Former PM Manmohan Singh with Full State Honours

Dr. Manmohan Singh, one of India’s most respected leaders and former Prime Minister, was laid to rest on December 28, 2024, at Nigambodh Ghat in New Delhi. The nation bid farewell to the statesman with full state honours, marking the end of an era in Indian politics.

The solemn ceremony witnessed the presence of high-ranking officials, including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. These leaders, along with a host of dignitaries, paid their last respects to Dr. Singh, laying wreaths as a mark of their reverence.

A Farewell Steeped in Tradition

Amid the chanting of sacred hymns, Dr. Singh’s eldest daughter, Upinder Singh, lit the funeral pyre, fulfilling the final rites in accordance with traditional rituals. The ceremony was attended by family, close friends, political leaders, and diplomats, reflecting Dr. Singh’s influence both within India and internationally.

An Icon of Indian Politics

Dr. Manmohan Singh served as India’s Prime Minister for a decade, from 2004 to 2014, and is remembered as the architect of India’s economic liberalization. As an economist and policymaker, his vision reshaped the country’s economic landscape, paving the way for growth and globalization. Known for his humility and integrity, Dr. Singh earned the admiration of leaders and citizens alike, leaving behind a legacy of dedicated service and progressive leadership.

Tributes Pour In

Tributes poured in from across the political spectrum and around the world. Leaders highlighted his unparalleled contribution to India’s development, particularly in the realms of economy and diplomacy. International leaders, who had worked with Dr. Singh, lauded him as a visionary statesman and a guiding force in fostering global cooperation.

The nation mourns the loss of a leader who combined intellect, empathy, and steadfast dedication to his country. As Dr. Singh is laid to rest, his contributions to India’s history and his role in shaping its future will forever be remembered.
